In one time and place, purple was the norm, because the dyes, produced in modern tunisia, with Carthage having the monopoly for much of it's existence, was prohibitively expensive, so only the rich and powerful could indulge in even a purple stripe. The stripe, in fact, was the telltale mark of a Roman senator.
